A shift towards family-based solutions
One in 10 children and young people around the world are separated from their families, many of them abandoned and neglected. More orphans are created every day due to humanitarian crises such Israel's devastating assault on Gaza. Traditionally, orphanages have been considered the best place to care for children and young people without parental care. But that thinking is changing.
Join AFF members SANAD and SOS Children's Villages as they delve into the critical movement of de-institutionalisation, which focuses on transitioning children from orphanage settings to nurturing family-based care. The two organisations, both dedicated to caring for and empowering children and young people who have lost their parents, will explore the meaning and objectives of family-based care and how this approach can help ensure a safe and positive experience for every orphaned child.
The 75-minute session will focus on:
- The necessity and suitability principle - the speakers will unpack the core principles of the UN Guidelines on Alternative Care, emphasising the importance of turning to institutional care only as a last resort, one that is only used when absolutely necessary and suitable for the child's individual needs.
- Contextualisation is key - acknowledging the diverse needs of children across different regions, the session will address the importance of tailoring de-institutionalisation efforts to the specific context and cultural background of each community.
- The Role of philanthropists - philanthropists can play a vital role in supporting successful de-institutionalisation. Explore how your resources and influence can be effectively channeled to empower this transformation.
- Building a Safe Transformation - the speakers will highlight key success factors for a smooth transition, ensuring the safety and well-being of children throughout the process.
