Innovative solutions for children in crisis

Sharing the Ahlan Simsim vision for children in MENA

This virtual event will shine a spotlight on a new landmark report from the International Rescue Committee (IRC) called Transforming Tomorrow: Innovative Solutions for Children in Crisis. The report draws on the successes of Ahlan Simsim (Welcome Sesame), an initiative created by Sesame Workshop and the IRC to deliver early childhood development (ECD) and learning to children affected by conflict and crisis in the Middle East.

Launched with the support of the MacArthur Foundation’s first-ever US$100 million 100&Change award, and additional support from the LEGO Foundation, Ahlan Simsim is the largest ECD intervention in the history of humanitarian response.

Since 2018, it has reached more than three million children and caregivers with direct early childhood services and playful learning in Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. In parallel, more than 23 million children across the Middle East and North Africa have watched the locally produced Arabic language version of Sesame Street.

For more about Ahlan Simsim, listen to this episode of The Impact Room, a podcast hosted by Maysa Jalbout.

As over a million children in Gaza continue to bear the brunt of conflict, and an entire generation of Syrian children solemnly mark 13 years of protracted crisis, this event will explore what it takes to deliver innovative solutions in the most complex settings and sustain impact for children.
