Safeguarding cultural heritage in Palestine

Preserving community resilience amidst destruction

RIWAQ, the Centre for Architectural Conservation, is a pioneering Palestinian nonprofit founded in 1991 and dedicated to preserving and reviving Palestine’s architectural and cultural heritage through a multi-pronged approach—documentation, restoration, community engagement, and policy advocacy.

This session hosted by the Arab Foundations Forum (AFF) will highlight RIWAQ’s mission to protect cultural heritage in the face of acute destruction and loss. Through field-based examples and lessons learned, the discussion will explore how community engagement, cultural resilience, and innovative preservation methods can foster revival and recovery even amidst conflict.

Cultural heritage is more than architecture — it is a source of belonging, safety, and identity. In times of erasure, historic sites endure as living testaments to people’s lives and memories.
