Atfaluna

Founded in 1992, Atfaluna Society for Deaf Children is a Palestinian NGO based in Gaza City supporting children and adults with hearing disabilities. Initially founded as a school, Atfaluna has expanded to provide a range of educational, health, social, and vocational services, reaching over 40,000 individuals annually. The organisation works to improve the quality of life of persons with hearing disabilities by promoting their inclusion in education, employment, and community life.

Programmes

  • Child Protection Unit

    The Child Protection Unit provides services including forming a committee to oversee the Association’s protection policy, enforcing a Code of Conduct, establishing a complaint follow-up policy for child abuse cases, and promoting a culture of child protection within civil society organizations.

  • Children's Handcrafts and Furniture

    The programme provides high-quality training to adults with hearing impairments, helping them develop skills, gain employment, and start small businesses. It aims to empower them socially and economically through their social and functional integration, by equipping them with the necessary experience and skills.

  • Children's School for the Deaf

    The school offers a bilingual education to students with hearing impairments, covering grades one through nine and focusing on their comprehensive development. Approximately 250 students with hearing impairments, aged 6 to 17, attend the school annually.

  • Community Center for Adult Education

    The Community Center for Adult Education promotes community development through education, training, and resource sharing. It aims to empower individuals and foster social transformation through lifelong learning and active community participation, supported by strong coordination and partnerships.

     
     
  • Comprehensive Education Programme

    The Programme promotes inclusive education in partnership with the Ministry of Education, UNRWA, and Palestinian universities. It trains educators, students, and families to support the integration of students with disabilities in mainstream schools and universities, aiming to ensure equal educational opportunities for all.

  • Early Intervention Programme

    The Early Intervention Programme offers educational, rehabilitative, and preventive services for children from birth to age five with special developmental and educational needs.

  • Outpatient Clinics

    The Outpatient Clinics Department offers comprehensive hearing and speech service. Services include hearing tests, hearing aid fitting and maintenance, earmold production, and treatment of speech and language issues.

  • Sign Language Programme

    The Sign Language Programme serves individuals with hearing disabilities and a wide range of community members - including families, service providers, and educators - to promote the development and use of Palestinian sign language. Its goal is to enhance communication, integration, and participation of people with hearing disabilities in society.

  • Social Services Programme

    The programme supports adults with hearing disabilities and their families by offering counseling, educational workshops, and job placement assistance. It also coordinates with external institutions to provide referrals and expand access to services beyond the association.

  • Vocational and Technical Training Programme

    The Programme empowers people with and without disabilities in Gaza through skill-based training to enhance employment opportunities. It offers courses in various trades such as sewing, carpentry, jewelry making, along with career guidance, human rights education, and workshops.
