Nama Women Advancement

Nama is an initiative of the Sharjah Government that exists to bridge global gender gaps and provide an enabling environment for women. Founded in 2015, Nama works with both local and global groups - including at the grassroots - delivering programmes on education, empowerment, and economic inclusion. These include providing marginalised women with access to education and revenue generation opportunities; helping global south businesses mainstream gender policies; training women in Indonesia and Bangladesh to be leaders and peace builders; and providing medical and psychosocial support to refugee girls and adolescents in Turkey and Lebanon. To-date the organisation has impacted more than 35,000 women in 35 countries.

Programmes

  • Flagship Programme Initiative

    Launched in partnership with UN Women, this Programme aims to foster women’s economic empowerment through entrepreneurship and help women-led enterprises in South Africa benefit from government procurement.

  • Advancing Girls’ Education in Nigeria

    A three-month programme launched during the Covid-19 pandemic to deliver learning to Nigerian children at home through the medium of radio. ACE Radio School targeted 65,000 girls and was mobilised by The Big Heart Foundation’s Girl Child Fund in partnership with the Malala Fund.

  • Girls Ambassadors for Peace Programme

    The Girl Ambassadors for Peace Programme ran in Indonesia and Bangladesh for three years from 2017 to 2019. It sought to encourage network building, and foster solidarity between civil society organisations, as well as promote girls’ economic empowerment through skills development and entrepreneurship training.

  • Home Gardening and Home Aesthetics Programme

    This Programme offers a combination of workshops on home aesthetics and home gardening, helping women to develop personal skills and appreciate sustainabilty.

  • Investing in Women’s Economic Inclusion

    In collaboration with Employment for Education, Nama delivered job training and job placements in demand-driven sectors for nearly 7,500 youth across Egypt, Jordan, and Palestine, of which nearly three quarters were women.

  • IRTIQA

    This is a platform that brings together businesses from across the Global South to help them understand and apply gender mainstreaming policies and promote women’s inclusion in the workplace and boardrooms.

  • Nanyuki Spinners and Weavers

    With support from Nama, and in partnership with the Big Heart Foundation, Nanyuki Spinners and Weavers, a crafts co-operative in Kenya, was able to scale up its training and targeting, creating new income-generating opportunities for 300 women and suppporting 12 local orphans with school fees. 

  • Salam Beirut

    A humanitaran programme launched in response to the 2020 Beirut blast in partnership with the Big Heart Foundation to address the immediate needs of the affected populations, especially children.

  • Smile Again Project

    Nama partnered with Pakistan’s Depilex Smileagain Foundation, which provides acid survivors with medical care, reconstructive surgery, and psychiatric support and helps to give them economic empowerment opportunities. This one-year partnership saw Nama provide psychological and psychiatric assistance that facilitated the social reintegration of 48 victims of violence.

  • The Jawaher Fund for the Advancement of Women’s Education

    The fund supports women’s education, and leverages public and private partnerships to provide career opportunities and scholarships. Through research grants, and in collaboration with universities, it also backs the development of a repository of research and data on various topics related to women throughout history, and their impacts on society and the economy.
